Practicum
Course Objectives:
• To connect with Taiwan schools, classrooms and teachers
• Get hand-on experiences with teaching in Taiwan
• To apply the instructional practices to real teaching sessions
Course Schedule:
The following schedule will be flexible and loose because it depends on the arrangement of the practicum institution and its schedule.
Stage 1:
Week 1~5
1. Professors get to know students’ background and their career/thesis directions
2. Professors and students collaboratively develop a meaningful practicum plan that’s tied to your career/thesis.
3. Visit practicum institutions and mentors.
4. Confirm practicum institution, mentor, time/responsibilities
Stage 2:
Week 6~9
1. Enter practicum institution to observe, hopefully participate peripherally.
2. Start thinking about the details of your practicum product that’s meaningful to the practicum institution and people there. The product can be a teaching project, a teaching plan, a manual or a video, etc. Discuss with your professor and mentor.
Stage 3:
Week 10~12
1. Develop practicum product (v.1) with professor and mentor.
2. Try out product (v.1), collect data, revise accordingly to come up with product (v.2) under the supervision of professor and mentor.
Stage 4:
Week 13~16
1. Implement product (v.2), collect data, revise accordingly to come up with product (final version) under the supervision of professor and mentor.
2. Make a PPT report the process and product
Stage 5:
Week 17~18
1. Show & Tell
2. Celebration of learning
Instructional Activities:
The primary format of this course will be students’ personal involvement in the practicum institution. This usually included classroom observation, proposed classroom issues, designing an instruction for solving the classroom issues, execution, feedback from the practicum mentors from the practicum institution.
Grading Procedures: Course grades will be calculated in the following manner:
Performance in the practicum institution (from practicum mentor) 40 pts
Study recorder (NTUE advisor; instructor of this course) 45 pts
Individual meetings X3 (NTUE advisor; instructor of this course) 15 pts
Total: 100 pts
A: 90-100 B: 80-89 C: 70-79 D: 60-69 F: 59 & Below
